Purchased as an unloved old villa, complete with long dark hallways and minimal outdoor connection, Eton II has undergone a purposeful transformation. Integrating a contemporary rear addition and pocketing courtyards throughout the plan, the resultant residence embraces northern light, garden views and natural light.

Respecting the bones of the existing residence, the addition expands and reconfigures the existing floorplan, wrapping new spaces around courtyards with a restrained material palette and large northern openings. The introduction of a large skylight in an existing hallway redefines the space, filling it with diffused light and transforming the passage into a well-lit gallery, emphasizing existing proportions of the villa.

Materials were selected for their robust and honest nature, with concrete architectural forms and natural stone flooring throughout the addition serving both structural and tactile purposes. Contrasting the existing charm, the contemporary solidity of concrete forms marks a departure from existing and introduces practical connections to courtyards. These spaces act as fluid transitions, integrating indoor and outdoor living and creating private sanctuaries throughout.

This collaborative process has seen an integration of ideas between all parties, ultimately resulting in the pragmatic evolution of a classic villa into a home for modern family living.
